For the longer approach from Hanoi, sleeper buses reach Sa Pa in around 5 to 6 hours; overnight trains go to Lao Cai, about 35 km away, followed by roughly an hour by bus or taxi up the mountain road. From Sa Pa, the route follows the valley towards the village.

The rice terraces are green from June to August and turn golden around harvest in September and early October, though June to August is also the wettest period. December to February is cold and often foggy; March to May and September to November are generally more settled for exploring the valley.
